Professional Development
I am dedicated to continue improving my teaching and creating an equitable, antiracist classroom environment in which all students can thrive. In Fall 2021, Dr. Peter Staab and I were awarded a ROTEL Grant to make online homework questions on WeBWorK more inclusive and representative of the students taking Applied Statistics. I have also participated in several workshops and longer programs such as the MAA's Project NExT and the Graduate Certificate in College Teaching at the University of Iowa.
ROTEL Grant
The Remixing Open Textbooks through an Equity Lens (ROTEL) initiative aims to make general education courses more equitable by revising the open educational resources used in those courses so that they better meet the needs of all students, especially underrepresented students. My colleague Dr. Peter Staab and I were awarded a ROTEL grant in Fall 2021. We plan to rewrite questions on WeBWorK, a free online homework platform, to make them more culturally-relevant, inclusive, and representative of the students who take Applied Statistics at Fitchburg State University. Since WeBWorK is used at universities around the world and the problem bank is available to all users, we expect that our rewritten questions will benefit students elsewhere, too.
Workshops
- Anti-Racist Pedagogy and Community-Engaged Teaching Workshop, Fitchburg State University, August 2021
- Math Circles of Chicago Teachers Workshop, Chicago, IL, August 2017, July 2018
Project NExT
Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is an MAA program that gives recent PhDs in the mathematical sciences the tools they need to thrive in an academic career. Through workshops, special sessions, and an ongoing email thread, Project NExTers develop strategies to improve their teaching, form connections with potential collaborators, and discuss other concerns such as life-work balance, tenure, and diversity in STEM. Since its founding in 1994, there have been over 1700 fellows, which now form a network of mathematicians all over the US. I belong to the Blue '17 cohort. If you want to know more, email me! I am happy to talk about all the great ways that Project NExT supports recent PhDs in their transition from graduate school to life as a junior faculty member.
Graduate Certificate in College Teaching
The Graduate Certificate in College Teaching helps prepare graduate students for careers in higher education. Candidates are required to complete two education courses, participate in two practica, and create an e-portfolio via an online class.
The education classes I took were Teaching and Learning in Higher Education and the Seminar in College Teaching. These classes helped me to reflect on my priorities as an educator. In addition, I practiced new strategies for keeping students' attention and accommodating different learning styles.
In Fall 2014 I completed a practicum with Dr. Keith Stroyan. The course was Engineering Math V: Vector Calculus, an advanced course in calculus that employs Mathematica for computations and graphics. During the semester, I regularly observed the lectures and met with the professor to discuss topics to be covered, homework assignment, projects, and exams. I also gave two lectures and led a review session before the final exam. In Fall 2015 I completed my second practicum with Dr. Maggy Tomova in Fundamental Properties of Spaces and Functions I, an introduction to real analysis and proofs class.
An e-portfolio is a professional webpage which is used to organize teaching materials and showcase your experiences and achievements as a graduate student. I have absorbed my e-portfolio into this website.
