Service
As a new faculty member at St. Olaf, I will have limited service obligations. At Macalester College and Fitchburg State University, my service usually took the form of committee work and departmental service. In Chicago and Iowa City, I found time to do professional service as well as community outreach. In Fall 2018, Brett Frankel and I launched the Northwestern Emerging Scholars Program (NESP) with the aim to increase diversity among students who major in math at Northwestern. In Spring 2019, we were awarded a Daniel I. Linzer Grant for Innovation in Diversity and Equity by Northwestern University, which funded NESP through the 2019 - 2020 academic year. Outside of Northwestern, I worked to increase access and interest in math by teaching for Math Circles of Chicago, the largest free math circle in the world, from Fall 2017 through Spring 2019.
During my time in Iowa City, I was an active member of the Math Graduate Board (MGB), the governing body for the math graduate students, and helped with many events it sponsored. I also sought out volunteer opportunities at the University of Iowa Mobile Clinic and the Despierta a Tu Salud initiative in an effort to get to know the local community, advocate and care for an under-served population, and keep up my Spanish speaking skills.
